Menopause commences with the absence of menstrual blood for a period of 12 consecutive months and with a significant decrease in the production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone.

This is due to the normal process of aging.

Pre-menopause is the period before the transition to menopause.Pre-menopausemay begin months or even years before the onset of menopause and ends with menopause. 

During this transitional stage women may experience irregular cycles (changes in actual duration or even absence of their cycle) and menopause symptoms.

Menopause is caused by the depletion of primordial follicles in the ovaries. Women have the maximum number of follicles in the 20th week of gestation while the pool of follicles decreases progressively until the age of 50, when this tank of follicles is depleted.

Vasomotor symptoms occur due to the degeneration of the temperature controlprocess in the neutral zones of the hypothalamus. A woman around the age of menopause easily fluctuates between the top and bottom thermal points leading to vasodilation.This causes outbreaks of sweat – hot flashes, when the body slightly over heats and body chills when the body slightly cools down. These symptoms are worst at night contributing to bad quality sleep. Changes in the body’s estrogen levels are to be blamed for these symptoms which gradually regulate over time.
